2012 Offensive Draft Prospect Overview

The 2012 NFL draft class has 2 potential franchise Quarterbacks, in Maxwell Award winner Stanford’s Andrew Luck and Baylor’s Heisman Trophy winning Robert Griffin III, The expectation is they go 1 and 2 overall to the Colts and Redskins. Ryan Tannehill has seen his stock on the rise simply by being the biggest dog on a short porch. and can be drafted within the top 5. Other quarterbacks with early round future starting potential include Oklahoma State’s 29 year old Brandon Weeden, Michigan State Kirk Cousins. The State of Arizona has Brock Osweiler, and Nick Foles. NCAA’s all – time leading career passer with 19217 yards, Houston Cougar, Case Keenum, SanDiego State, Ryan Lindley, Tennessee Chattanuga ,BJ Coleman, and 2012 Rose Bowl QB Russell Wilson of Wisconsin could find themselves on NFL rosters. Boise States Kellen Moore, Northern Illinois Chandler Harnish, and Tulsa Golden Hurricane GJ Kinne all may have a shot. 2011s Doak Walker award winner Alabama running back Trenton Richardson is the draft’s only 1st round running back. The position has not been devalued, it has become specialized. With the current NFL trends the days of several top 10 running backs have passed. The current NFL roster will carry corrals, 1st down backs, 3rd down backs, and short yardage, goal line backs. The amount of running in the NFL isn’t less, the amount of carries a back gets are. With 6 running backs with 2nd rd grades, the talent can fill NFL rosters. Virginia Tech’s David Wilson could find himself at the bottom of the 1st round wearing the Big Blue of the New York Football Giants. 4.38: 40 yard dash,1272 yards on 227 attempts and 15 touchdowns. Lamar Miller is ready to play in the NFL, possible 1st round pick, more likely an early 2nd round selection. There are as many as 12 running backs that have 2nd round grades, and more than 25 running backs in the first 3 rounds. Guys like : Isaiah Pead , LaMichael James, Cyrus Gray, Chris Rainey, Dan Herron, and Terrance Ganaway.
The NFL could add 45 new wide receivers to rosters in 2012. My 45th ranked WR, Oklahoma State WR Josh Cooper is 5’11” 189 lbs , 64 receptions for 660 yards and 3 touchdowns. There were as many as nine 1st round wide receivers, not all had great combine performances, or team interviews. The production of this corps of wide receivers cannot be denied. Lead by two time Bilitnicof award winner, Justin Blackmon,Michael Floyd,Kendall Wright , Rueben Randle, Stephen Hill, Alshon Jeffery, Juron Criner, Nick Toon, Marvin McNutt, Brian Quick, Tommy Streeter…. You know all 11 of those names! If a team is needing a receiver this season, and can’t find one? same on them, the amount of talent added to the free agent movement in wide receivers. There aren’t enough places on the roster? Should be interesting what the future holds for the wide receiver position. Oh….I know where they go. The tight end position in the NFL is important but there my be 5 to 6 tight ends to come into the league, none in the first round. I see the bigger wide receivers finding a home at tight end. The next wave of tight ends will be like Jimmy Graham, and Jermichael Finley. Of the Offensive linemen coming out Matt Kalil, and David DeCastro are at the top of the Outside and inside of the linemen available. 19 potetionally starting Tackles, 4 first round picks. Jonathan Martin, Riley Reiff, Mike Adams, along with Matt Kalil all have top to middle of the first round grades. The quality of play at the tackle position is stronger in the 2nd and early 3rd round this draft, then in earlier years. The guard position has 12 interior offensive linemen with starting grades, 4 possible 1st rounders. Cordy Glenn, Kelechi Osemele, and Wisconsin guard Kevin Zeitler. The interior linemen, as a class, have a higher level of skill then the tackles available in this years draft. David DeCastro may be the best overall linemen in the draft. The knock against guards is similar to the knock on safeties. why draft a guard when I can draft a tackle and move him down if he doesn’t make it.? Why draft a safety , when I can convert a quick linebacker, or a corner if they wash out on the corner? There are 4 centers with starting potential available in the draft. 41 reps at the combine, Michigan center,David Mock, Philip Blake, and Ben Jones, Wisconsin center Peter Konz tops the list.
