Texans Start What They Can Finish

Going into our first season with high expectations is….well…difficult. A lot of emotions come together. The playoffs ended abruptly, but included a feeling of accomplishment. It was fun to be a Texans fan. It is always good, but fun…I like. As the season approaches and all things line up for the season. I was reflecting back on the off-season we had. The landscape for the Texans would change, good or bad it would change. Eric Winston, Matt Leinart, and Lawrence Vickers are cut. The latter two not that big of a deal. The first? ….That “Caveman” they cut, no longer we, but they. The next two weeks would set fans on their ear. Mike Brisiel signs with Raiders. Chris Myers visits Tennessee, then returns. Jason Allen signs with Cincinnati. Mario with Buffalo. Joel Dreessen goes back to Colorado and signs with the Broncos. The punch in the teeth had to be DeMeco Ryans being traded to the Eagles. After all the free agent frenzy the Texans manage to land the coveted services of Punter Donnie Jones….alright we got a punter!! The breakdown of the mayhem goes like this. The Texans lost on the offensive line 2 of the starting 5, that’s 40% of one of the premier O-lines in football. The entire right side. To add a jab into that we lose Joel Dreessen as well, not keeping Schaub upright seemed like a very real possibility in mid March. The trade of DeMeco Ryans was like losing a member of the family. I went silent for a good three hours. Then I let it go, going off on any and every Texans coach, administrator, legal assistant. I was yelling at every name I could think of. I calmed down, but what hit me pretty hard. Losing two jerseys from my game day rotation. Williams and Ryans were no longer Houston Texans…WOW! Our starting right tackle, right guard, and blocking tight end in, Eric Winston, Mike Brisiel, and Joel Dreessen. The defense lost Mario Williams, DeMeco Ryans, and Jason Allen. Which puts us short a pass rusher, field general, and a platoon cover corner. The draft comes around, so the mind went a little numb. We could focus on building back ups if we could replace some of the starters. The debate was long and the results aren’t in but I’m liking Whitney Mercilus alot..The Texans draft 2 offensive linemen early and 2 wide receivers. Brandon Brooks looks the part, Ben Jones could make the team. Keshawn Martin seems to have a grip on his role, kinda waiting to see what DeVier Posey is looking for. Hope he puts it together.
Free agency now puts its hands on the team. added are Bradie James, who spent time with Wade Phillips and Reggie Herring in Dallas. Allan Ball, with an understanding of the scheme, having played in it as well.Unfortunately he looks to be cut by the end of preseason. WR Bryant Johnson was brought in as camp hand who is unlikely to stick around. So as seats get fewer in meeting rooms. We move to thinning the roster. Next update will go into position breakdowns. Do we have all the spots filled? Will we upgrade if a player we wants comes available? The players on our roster may not be all that is added. We could pick up a player cut from another roster, if it’s believed to be an upgrade. Are we riding this pony to the finish? We start, we finish Texans fans!!
