The Houston Texans will be in Jacksonville, Florida Sunday at EverBank Field. The Jaguars home opener will be Shahid Khan’s first. Khan purchased the NFL’s third smallest market’s team for $760 million last November. The Jaguars are the least expensive of all NFL teams. After a media friendly war of words between Khan prompting star player and training camp holdout Maurice Jones-Drew to “get on the train.” and Jones-Drew demands of a new contract. MJD showed in time to start the season, and escape any team
This will be the 21st meeting of this “Rivalry.” Houston leads the series 11-9, and have three season sweeps. Although these teams have rarely meet under playoff type circumstances. In ’09 we went 9-7 missing the playoffs, because the Bengals laid down to the Jets, letting them into he playoffs. We were swept that season by a 7-9 Jaguars team. ’10 the Texans start 4-2 going into a bye week. Lose two in a row, first to the Colts. Followed by a Chargers fourth quarter comeback of Phillip Rivers and the “fantasy football star of the week” Seyi Ajrotutu. Prompting the Texans to be labeled as “soft”, and “can’t finish” games. 4-4 going into Jacksonville was still something that should have righted the ship. Jaguars wide receiver Mike Thomas had another idea. He would catch, off the deflection of a ball that should have been intercepted, but was instead poorly batted down, a fifty yard hail mary bomb from QB David Gerrard in the end zone for the game winning touchdown. The Texans would go on the lose five of their next seven games. Head Coach Gary Kubiak, if most fans had it their way, would had been fired after that.
The Jaguars offensive line is injured.Left guard Eben Britton is questionable, and Right tackle Cam Bradfield is out. I still expect the Jaguars to run Maurice Jones-Drew heavy. Texans seem a little suspect up the middle. Some blame Brady James, I’m more inclined to believe that teams try to soften our edges by driving the middle. That being said they are going to take what they can get. A major highlighted spot on the Jacksonville offensive line is the 2009, eighth overall pick left tackle Eugene Monroe out of Virginia. Monroe blocked, Jared Allen all game long versus the Vikings. Allen was 2011 All-Pro defensive end, and had 22 sacks last season, a half a sack off the single season sack record. Monroe held Allen to zero sacks, no quarterback pressures. Leaving Allen with an assisted tackle as his only stat. Monroe said of Allen “He was an elite player and has an incredible motor. it’s unlike any other player, He’s talented.” I’m gonna go out on a limb and say so is Eugene Monroe.
The Texans come into this game with all of their starters ready to play. The Jacksonville defensive line is stout and aggressive, holding Adrian Peterson to under a hundred yards last week. Terrance Knighton and Tyson Alualu, anchor the D-line. Outside linebacker Daryl Smith is out, and cornerback Derek Cox is questionable. Other Jags noticeable are back-up running back Rashad Jennings who was listed as out for Sundays game.
Jacksonville is home to one of American’s greatest band’s Lynyrd Skynyrd. Maybe the Jaguars will be asking the Texans to “Gimme three steps”
