Brian Cushing is out for the season with a torn ACL in his left knee. New York Jets Left Guard Matt Slauson blocked Cushing below the knee and then rolled into Cushing not allowing him to avoid being pinned up. The block was one, a clip ,and two illegal. Matt Slauson should receive a league fine. As a Texans fan it’s easy to call it dirty, but I’m not sure it was. Head Coach Gary Kubiak commented on the block ” ;He (Brian Cushing) got cut on the play. Obviously, cutting is part of football but the rule says you can’t come back to your own goal line and cut. So the question is, is the guy coming back to his own goal line? That’s in the League’s hands.”Cushing waited in the tunnel after the game to congratulate the team on the win. The leadership he possesses my be a hard part of his game to replace, but not impossible with the locker room the Texans have. We my see ; JJ Watt in that role, Antonio Smith, Connor Barwin. It wouldn’t surprise me if Jonathan Joseph took the reigns.
There is a “Next Man Up” mentality for the Houston Texans that carried the team through several significant injuries last season. Mario Williams went down with a torn pectoral muscle, Brooks Reed stepped in. Matt Schaub went down with a LisFranc injury of his foot, Matt Lienart went in,….ops, T.J. Yates took over. Andre Johnson misses a stretch and, well? Nobody took his spot. Well I guess you could say that Ravens, player, guy what’s his bisquet. The Texans do have options at the Inside Linebacker position.
Tim Dobbins went in for Cushing after his injury in the second quarter. He had four tackles, doesn’t sound like a lot? JJ Watt had five tackles, and the teams leading tackler, during the game, Bradie James had seven. Dobbins was drafted by the San Diego Chargers in the fifth round of the 2006 NFL Draft. Tim earned All Big 12 honors while at Iowa State. He played for Wade Phillips while in San Diego. Dobbins knows Wade’s system, he will get the first shot at filling Cushing’s spot. The 2011 undrafted Mister Alexander an Inside Linebacker from Florida State will move up a spot on the depth chart. Colorado States Jesse Nading can play the inside position as well. The biggest question will be the possible return of Miami Hurrican and 2010 fourth round pick Darryl Sharpton. Darryl is currently on the PUP (physically unable to perform) list. He will be eligible to return to practice after the Green Bay game. Coach Kubiak spoke about Sharpton “We’ve got a couple weeks here yet before there can be any decisions made on him. The best way I could answer that is to tell you that if he was available to come off today and help us, he’s still not ready today.” The free agent wire, and other teams practice squads will also be options for General Manager Rick Smith to consider. The loss of Brian Cushing is painful, but I’m going to suggest it my hurt the fans more not seeing him playing than the team itself. Good Luck on your surgery, recover, and rehab……hope to see you back better than ever “Cush
