The Texans make moves over the last two days that prove they belong where they are. Instead of waiting on Darryl Sharpton to come off PUP (Physically Unable to Perform). Then take three weeks to evaluate him. The Texans make a proactive move and sign inside linebacker Barrett Ruud. Cut the underperforming Trindon Holliday and bring offensive guard Cody White up from the practice squad. Aggressive moves made without hesitation. Holliday was the star of the team during per-season running back three touchdown on special teams. I figured Trindon would win us a game or two with his speed… He never got going averaging 19.4 yards on kick returns. FIFTIETH in the league that’s 50! There are thirty two teams in the NFL, back-ups were out performing Trindon.
His punt return skills were a little better,
averaging 9.6 yards. Good enough to land him fifteenth on the list of punt returners. Problem was ahead of him on the list : Leodis McKelvin, Randall Cobb, Devin Hester, Danny Amendola….Point? They all contribute, some are starters on either offense or defense. If you listen to my podcast http://blogtalkradio.com/fb4fbheads You know how I felt about Trindon Holliday. My argument was a long-snapper is a specialists, they only do one thing. Why not have a specialist as a weapon, a game changer?……Well I’m not gonna say I was wrong, I will say I overestimated Holliday’s impact. It’s a justified cut.
Cody White was brought up to get first team repetitions. The offensive line’s right side rotates players. Antonio Caldwell has a nagging ankle injuries, and Ben Jones is still developing. During the Monday night game against the Jets the Texans ran the ball six times to the right side for thirty-five yards. Running one play for one yard behind the right guard.Comparison? The Texans ran sixteen plays for eighty-six yards behind the offensive line’s left side. The reason for White’s addition from the practice squad was based off two plays….I’m convinced. Second and two 5:03 on the clock in the fourth quarter. Arian Foster runs left over tackle Duane Brown, gain of one yard. Third and one 4:20 remaining, Foster runs left over guard Wade Smith, stuffed for no gain. The Texans are forced to punt. The Texans couldn’t fool the Jets into thinking they were going to run off the right side. Without the element to at least influence doubt. The Jets weren’t biting, in fact they bite. Closing out games in the final moments is key to Gary Kubiaks game plan. The Cody White move also speaks to the disappointment third round pick Brandon Brooks has been.
Inside linebacker Barrett Ruud is signed by the Texans two days after the Saints cut him. New Orleans made roster moves of their own. Barrett Ruud was a 2005 second round pick, thirty-sixth overall from Nebraska. From 2007 to 2010 Ruud had over 100 tackles in each season. 2009 Barrett was tied for second in tackles with London Fletcher with 142. In that stretch he only missed one game. 2011 saw Ruud in Tennessee starting the first nine games of the season before being placed on IR (injured reserve) for a groin issue. He was used in a limited role in New Orleans. Barrett Ruud will bring a veteran presents and I’m sure he’s glad to be here.
